If you’ve been reading the Content Marketeer for a while, you probably already know we really like LinkedIn. And when LinkedIn started their “Things I Carry” series, we were big fans from the start.

Which is why we thought we’d do our own take on the theme—with ten things we think content marketers should carry with them at all times.

1. A solid content strategy.

The most important thing you can do for your content marketing success is to have a great strategy. This is your road map for content success. Use it.

2. A notebook for ideas.

As you know, the best ideas often come at the worst times. Carry a notebook with you always and jot things down when they come up—even if they seem silly. You never know what will trigger a great idea tomorrow.

3. The names of a couple smart contractors.

Ever suddenly been swamped? Yeah. Me too. That’s why I now keep a file of contractors and potential contractors who I can reach out to on a moment’s notice.

I’ve already read their portfolios. I know their work. I have referrals and references checked. And when I need to get someone onboard quickly, they’re the first people I’ll email.

4. A breakdown of your business goals.

The most important thing you can do on any piece of content is to make sure it fits with your business goals and meets your user needs. Having those business goals in your wallet, written in the front of your notebook, or posted on the wall behind your computer is a great way to keep them top of mind.

5. User personas.

As I said above, user needs are also key to content marketing success. And when you have a good user persona, those needs (and well as how to write for them) are much easier to identify and meet.

6. Books full of inspiring writing.

Great writers are also readers. If you’re creating content regularly, you should also be reading books that pique your creativity.

7. An ear for stories.

People respond to great stories…and they’re all around us. Learn to ask great questions. Jot down stories that intrigue or inspire you. And find a way to tie those stories into your content marketing.

8. Patience.

Content marketing takes time. So does trust building and real success. Work hard, push yourself, but don’t beat yourself up if things take longer than you had hoped.

9. Humility.

None of us know everything there is to know—about content marketing or any other topic. And you’ll be surprised what you learn when you spend time listening, even to those who have less experience or understanding.

10. Your best friend’s phone number.

We all have bad days. That blog post you loved was a flop. Your tweet had a really ridiculous typo—and went viral. Or three contractors missed their deadlines and sent you scurrying for an article to publish.

When the crap hits the fan, call someone who will let you vent, then talk you down so that you can get back to focus and serenity.

What do you carry with you for content marketing projects?
